The statistics speak for themselves. Matt Haggerty scored 23 touchdowns and snagged 7 interceptions on for the Division IV champion Seton Catholic Sentinels this year, and followed his football performance by hitting .414 with a 6-0 pitching record for the #1 seeded SCP baseball team.

The East Valley Tribune recognized Haggerty’s accomplishments by naming him their 2012-13 Male Athlete of the Year.

Haggerty told the Tribune’s Mark Heller about his plans to play solely baseball at Grand Canyon University next year, “I’m going somewhere I know is a team and the players have to care more about that and less about themselves, stats and draft status.”

Matt Haggerty will be patrolling center field for Grand Canyon University next season.

Having watched much of the talent that was nominated for the honor this year, Haggerty is certainly up there with the likes of Brophy’s multi-sport star Devon Allen, and perhaps what set Haggerty apart is his dominance on both sides of the football- you’d be hard pressed to find another DB in the state with as many takeaways over the past 3 seasons at the varsity level.

When congratulated on his honor he made sure to mention what he believes is the true source of his success, “Couldn’t have done it without my teammates and coaches.”
